4 Stars Excellent but demanding in places
I wanted a book that would take me from coarse manipulating images in Photoshop to lifting out the richness of detail. This book does it! Unlike many similar books on Photoshop, there is no padding, no overuse of large images to extend without adding value, this book is to the point. I learned many tricks and valuable techniques.

That said, it can be demanding and sometimes it is too tight. It would have helped if the key steps were relegated each to a single line or a single dot point to reduce risk of missing a step buried many words.

Sometimes too the steps are many such as project 1 beginning page 250 and the background or reason for doing it is not spelled out (what is “Apply Image” and why? page 253). It would help if the introduction to the recipe covered key steps and what will happen with cross references.

It is also not empathetic to the reader. For example page 252 it takes steps to duplicate a blue layer and after a levels adjustment it is called “this mask”. What “mask” I ask? Then in step 3 (page 253) it refers to a “layer mask”. Is this the copied blue layer or the black and white mask? An explanation of the blue layer copied would have helped and if somehow a mask, please say so.

It is however one of the best reference books and goes highly recommended with a decent index and support CD. Well done Galer and Andrews but again, care with the steps more prominent and a little explanation of what some steps actually do (eg what does “Apply Image” actually do as there is nothing in your book about it and oft used).

5 Stars get it if only for the DVD
I used this book with the DVD for a photoshop class that I took at the local college. The DVD contains ~8 hours of easy to follow tutorials which saved my day. Mostly because the teacher wouldn’t show us a lot of the tools that we could use. The tutorials are easy enough to follow, and you can go at your own pace, and easily rewind on your computer if you need to. I mostly followed tutorials right along with what I was doing in photoshop, so it helped me immensely.

This is a very good concept. I hope that Galer’s future books follow the same format.

I highly recommend this book, even if you only get it for the DVD.

5 Stars Especially useful as a textbook
Well, I guess I have to disagree with one reviewer who said all 10 students in his class didn’t like the book.

I teach digital photography at the college level, and have for quite a few years. My wife and I are also professional photographers with our own studio. I use this book as the textbook for the Photoshop portion of my class. It is pretty easy to follow, and gets technical enough in places to suit a college-level class.

A lot of Photoshop books don’t worry about how it works. They just give you step-by-step recipes to follow for a particular task. This book spends some time on explaining what is going on underneath. If you just want quick recipes for certain actions, buy a Scott Kelby book. They are excellent, and I use several myself. This book is for somebody who wants to know why it works.

The book does assume a pretty good working knowledge of your computer. If you are a beginner with Photoshop, you should be OK, but if you are a beginner on the computer, this might not be the best choice.

2 Stars Lack of Detail
There were several times where I had to seek alternative sources to have my questions answered about Photoshop. So, I do feel this book could have addressed topics in more detail. If you are a beginner in Photoshop, I don’t recommend this book.

1 Star Avoid This Book!
This book is awful. I am in a Photoshop class and 10 out of 10 students find this book not useful in anyway. The book cover says “essential skills” but the information in the book assumes that you know what your doing in photoshop. If you want a book to help you understand essential skills about working with photos in photoshop avoid this book!

I did not wish to put any stars but amazon makes you select one.

1 Star Do not waste your money here
I was very disappointed in this video course.

Rather than “mastering” Photoshop this was

more of a bare bones introduction to the various

concepts. The tutorials are very short and several

important concepts are dealt with in one sentence

in the syllabus and some are not touched on at all.

I contacted the company requesting a refund and they

told me that they do not offer refunds so I am stuck

with this amateurish product.

My advice is stay away from this company. You

could do much better by saving your money and

Googling “free photoshop tutorials”….Hundreds

of good ones available at no cost to you the happy

Lightroom 2 Streamlining your Digital Photography Process

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is the primary software-of-choice for today’s digital photographer. As a new tool, using Lightroom requires mastering new skills—not always an easy task. Compounding the challenge, many photographers don’t have fundamental knowledge of digital image processing. Lightroom 2: Streamlining your Digital Photography Process offers you  the digital imaging fundamentals and the Lightroom-specific skills you need to quickly learn and retain a mastery of Lightroom.

Written and designed by a professional photographer, designer, fine art printmaker and instructor, this book is designed to simplify and accelerate the learning process and is unique in both content and presentation. Nat Coalson is an Adobe Certified Expert in Lightroom and Photoshop, and has taught photography and imaging classes and workshops for many years. The approach taken by Lightroom 2: Streamlining your Digital Photography Process is based on over 20 years of professional experience in photography, printing, and imaging, and the methods of instruction were developed through the author’s work with students and clients.

At 400 pages, this book clearly explains how to use all of Lightroom’s controls, and much more. Beginning with the original image capture, all the way through importing, editing, processing and presenting photos, the text also explains fundamental imaging concepts every modern photographer needs to know. Not just the “how” but also the “why”. Not just recipes, but core skills you will use again and again. And by developing stronger technical skills, you will be able to focus more on creative expression.

The content of Lightroom 2: Streamlining your Digital Photography Process also demonstrates a simple, practical workflow. You will learn real-world, professional-level production techniques through straightforward examples and easy-to-follow instructions.

The book is divided into nine chapters:

  • Chapter 1. Digital Imaging Foundations: resolution, bit depth, color spaces, etc.
  • Chapter 2. Digital Photography Workflow: step-by-step outline of the processing pipeline
  • Chapter 3. The Lightroom Workspace: modules, panels, tools, view modes, etc.
  • Chapter 4. Digital Image Capture: benefits of raw, using histograms, critical exposure settings, capturing the most possible data, etc.
  • Chapter 5. Import Photos into Lightroom: creating efficient file systems, automation and batch processing, using presets, etc.
  • Chapter 6. Organize your Photos in Library: identifying selects, using filters and collections, working with metadata, keywording strategies, etc.
  • Chapter 7. Process your Photos in Develop: evaluating the photo, adjusting global tone, contrast and color; local adjustment brushes and graduated filters, retouching, etc.
  • Chapter 8. Export Images from Lightroom: choosing the right file formats, post-processing actions, using export plug-ins, etc.
  • Chapter 9. Presenting your Work: working in the Slideshow, Print and Web modules

Each chapter describes in detail specific aspects of the Lightroom workflow and includes step-by-step sequences that summarize the topics presented. Throughout the book, you will learn and integrate concepts quickly and easily through numerous shortcuts, tips, reminders and warnings. Lightroom 2: Streamlining your Digital Photography Process includes over 300 color figures, including screenshots and illustrations, plus dozens of the author’s own photographs.

In addition, Appendices provide a reference sheet for the most useful shortcuts, a comprehensive list of additional online Lightroom resources and a guide to optimizing Lightroom performance.

Lightroom 2: Streamlining your Digital Photography Process gives you a complete mastery of Lightroom and the digital photography workflow, as well as a solid foundation in digital imaging. As a result, you will be able to produce the best possible photographs with the least possible effort.

Foreword by renowned landscape photographer William Neill.

5 Stars Excellent LR2 Guide
I’ve been using LightRoom since switching from Aperture two years ago. LightRoom is, without question, a better, more powerful and feature-rich application BUT, not being a “computer geek”, I never felt that I was able to get the maximum benefit from it. Coalson’s book has been a huge help for me. The book’s content, lay-out and approach are all designed to quickly improve one’s ability to optimize LightRoom. The writing style, explanations, step-by-step instructions and guidance are clear, easy-to-follow and comprehensive. And you don’t need to be a “geek” to get it! I now keep Coalson’s book on my desk for every editing session and find it continues to be a very useful tool. My satisfaction with LightRoom has improved dramatically as I am now faster, more productive and a better image editor.

4 Stars Lightroom 2: Streamlining your Digital Photography Process
If you are seeking an introductory text to Lightroom 2, this is an ideal purchase. The author knows his subject.

Having mastered the basics of LR2, you will find more than sufficient information throughout the book to take you to more complex workflows (if you wish).

I bought this book upon purchasing LR2 (still use CS4) and it served my purposes admirably.

Definitely worth considering.

4 Stars Great so far
I’ve only made it through part of the book (about half), but I’ve already learned so much. Very easy to read, and the author lets you decide how to set up your workflow, instead of saying “do this, now do this”. Instead, he says “do it this way, OR do it this way, OR do it that way”. I can’t believe a product like Lightroom doesn’t come with some kind of manual, but I guess the silver lining is that we get to spend more money finding the guide book that suits us best. Hopefully, you find the right one for you the first time. I will say that other reviews of this book assisted me in making this one the first I bought. I’m about 99.9% sure this will be the ONLY book. I leave a little room there since I haven’t made it all the way through the book. Read all the reviews, as most folks have detailed the book far better than I can, and then decide if that’s the way you learn. For me, it’s been a good investment!

5 Stars Takes users “to the next level”
I saw Nat speak at a Denver photo club and enjoyed his teaching very much. I have used Lightroom for about 2 years now and I just read the book. Much of it was review for me, but it would be helpful for a new user. The book helped me with a number of advanced functions (gradient filters, brush applications). The book also helped me understand data management and backup methods to make my workflow more secure and streamlined. This is now my “must have” guidebook for lightroom 2.

5 Stars Your Best Guide to Lightroom!
Adobe Lightroom is not difficult to learn to use, but if yu want to learn to use it most effectively, you need this book. It’s an ideal guide to digital asset management, workflow improvement, and using all the features of Lightroom to help you organize and improve your images. Highly recommended.

5 Stars Very good resource for Lightroom 2 users
I’m a subscriber to Lynda.com and do not own the DVD. That said I have watched most of the videos on this DVD online and they are very well done. I can’t see how anyone would be disappointed. I wanted to post an outline of what the videos covered so those considering purchasing the DVD set could make a better decision.

As Deke says, “Photoshop CS3 One-on-One is about in-depth instruction, real-world projects, and an informal while at the same time detailed and painstakingly accurate approach. It s your chance to go from 0 to 60 in a single series. I hope you ll agree, this is one-on-one training at its best.” Photoshop CS3 One-on-One covers the following topics, with an eye toward addressing techniques in the order that they are best employed:

  • Understanding what Photoshop is and what it can do
  • Zooming, scrolling, and getting around an image
  • Making the most of the new-and-improved CS3 interface
  • Using Adobe Bridge to organize and manage images
  • Saving workspaces for maximum comfort and efficiency
  • Correcting colors using the Variations and Hue/Saturation commands
  • Taking on the professional-grade luminance editors, Levels and Curves
  • Resampling an image and selecting an interpolation setting
  • Cropping and straightening a photograph
  • Using the selection tools, including the new Refine Edges command
  • Retouching and image and healing away blemishes
  • Understanding masking, layering, and layer comps
  • Sharpening, blurring, and averaging the details in a photograph
  • Working with transparency and blend modes
  • Working with transparency and blend modes
  • Cloning and healing in perspective using Vanishing Point 2
  • Creating and editing text
  • Using layer effects and styles to correct photographs and achieve special effects
  • Making the most of adjustment layers, smart objects, and smart filters
  • Working with the wealth of new features in Camera Raw 4, including its ability to open photos saved in JPEG or TIFF
  • Stitching multiple photographs seamlessly using the new and improved Auto-Align, Auto-Blend, and Photomerge
  • Recording actions and printing your images

It’s a lot, to be sure. But thanks to Deke’s wit, encouragement, and charm, it goes by quickly. His promise: “Give me 7 hours a week for a solid month, and I ll turn you into the most capable Photoshop user you know.” Who could say no?

3 Stars Little to basic for me
Personally I was a little disappointed with this DvD. Not because it was a bad training guide, but because I knew most everything in it already. I’ve been a creative retoucher for 17 years and thought this DvD would get me up to speed on the new features in CS3. Which it did a OK job of.

All in all this would be a excellent training DvD for a Photoshop beginner or even a newer user. If you’ve been working in Photoshop as a Professional for many years, you might want to try a different book or DvD. One thing I did love was learning some newer keyboard short cuts. Deke McClelland is a smart guy, I hope he comes out with a much more advanced DvD in the future.

Cheers

5 Stars The best ‘how to’ book ever!
I found this book at the local library and kept renewing it because it was so helpful. I have elements 6 (the book is for elements 5) but this is by far the best book on elements photoshop that I have found. I have used it many times on my photos. If you are a beginner with elements like me then you will love this book! In case you are wondering, I have also purchased 3 other elements 6 photoshop books before I purchased this book. The first was ‘Photoshop Elements 6 for Dummies’, then ‘Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop Elements 6′ and last ‘Photoshop Elements 6 in easy steps’. Now I can stop!

4 Stars The Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration and retouching book
A very informative and well written book. The man knows his subject, but does not go so far into theory as to lose the average reader.

5 Stars nice book
I love this book. It makes my life easier. What more could you ask for. This was just what i needed.

5 Stars Great “Step-by-Step” Guide

5 Stars crumble, crackle, brilliant
Not only is the book a great source of inspiration, Von gives you the tools to make it work for yourself. The files included on DVD are nice and big and there are sample files included so you can see how he applies them. Awesome book–I’m hoping there will be a volume 2…

5 Stars Stunning
Just a joy to hold and thumb through. This is professional all the way through. The paper and illustrations are art book quality. As others have said this is not a how to book. It is an inspiration book – something to get you going. With your good knowledge of photoshop (which is not the topic of this book!)and some fresh inspiration you too can see things anew and start creating.

5 Stars Great Resource for Illustrators and Designers Alike
I attended Von Glitschka’s “Illustrative Design” session at the 2008 HOW Design conference in Boston and was so inspired by his presentation and work that I decided to purchase his book of textures.

The textures provided are manipulated from actual photos that he has taken almost daily. While it is true that he does not provide detailed instruction on how to use the textures in the book, he does provide links to his website where you can find tutorials. The textures are grayscale and not “clip art”, but are intended to be incorporated into your own work to create your own illustrations and designs, which is why I suspect he has not provided specific instructions for their use. The 60 sample illustrations included in the book cover a wide range of application and showcase each texture. You also get 60 bonus textures included on the DVD that are not highlighted in the book.

Get this book, get inspired, get creative, and have fun!

5 Stars Fantastic Book
Yes, it is true that Von Glitschka does not explain how to use these textures. But that information can be had elsewhere. (Hint: Turn them into Alpha Channels and fill or knock out to your heart’s delight. This is just one way. God bless Adobe. See Creative Photoshop, chapter seven by Derek Lea for further instruction.)

Also, Von Glitschka is incredibly generous on his blog. Thanks, dude!

Buy this book.

5 Stars Love the textures!
I ordered this book thinking it was a paper back and probably not very big. It turned out to be a large hardcover with 60 full page images of projects various artists created using Von’s textures, which by the way, are shown on the opposite page in black and white so you really get an idea of how versatile the texture can be. At first I wasn’t sure how to use them and wondered how the color was added, but if you just use your noggin it is pretty simple to figure out. (I am a beginning designer/student and believe me if I can do it anyone can…)

I love the book, love the textures and have many ideas of how I am going to use them in future projects. I also think the title is very fitting, I would highly recommend this book because any worthwhile artist/designer is going to appreciate the many creative opportunities the textures provide. Way to go Von !!

Photoshop CS3 Mastering Lab Color

Photoshop CS3 Mastering Lab Color

Based on the device-independent CIE specification from 1976, Lab color is frequently misrepresented as a techy, labor-intensive color space. In fact, Lab color performs certain types of color modifications more quickly and with better results than RGB. In Photoshop CS3: Mastering Lab Color, Deke McClelland explores how to use Lab color ‘to make bad photographs great and great photographs even better.’ He demonstrates image manipulations that are best suited to Lab, and walks through a typical, non-destructive Lab correction. Deke also shows how to correct lighting, apply selective color modifications, and reverse the effects of color cast. Exercise files accompany the course. Topics Include:

  • Targeting luminance and color information independently
  • Saving a Lab image
  • Balancing and deepening skin tones
  • Exposing bright eyes and teeth
  • Sharpening and blurring in Lab
  • Fading and blending edits
  • Using Levels, Curves, and Brightness/Contrast
  • Embedding an RGB image in a Lab composition
