Drawing a beach scene with sun and sand

In this tutorial, we’ll draw a beach using basic drawing tools and custom shapes tool etc. To add finishing touches we’ll apply some soft gradient.

Let’s start by selecting rounded rectangle tool (U).

Draw a big rounded rectangle of almost canvas size.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Create a shape using pen tool as shown.

Create a circle using elliptical shape tool.

Now select direct selection tool, right click and select delete bottom anchor point as shown.

Now reduce the opacity of semi circle to 77% as shown.

Create a rectangle using rectangular shape tool

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Select custom shape tool (U). From the preset flyout menu at the top select bird2 as shown below.

Draw a bird shape with white color and place it as shown.

Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer. Place it another position in the sky

Select the pen tool. Draw a shape as shown below.

Double click the layer to open layer style window. Apply settings as shown.

Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer. Move it downwards.

Repeat the above step to create another duplicate and move it a few pixel down.

Select pen tool and create some shapes thtat look like waves. Fill the shapes with diffrent shades of yellow and orange.

Create a pebble shape using pen tool as shown below.

Populate the sand area with small pebbles of diffrent shapes and sizes. Fill with diffrent shades to add variation.

With Photoshop one has the ability to use the Paint Tools to draw freehand and to create original images and graphics. You will find four Paint Tools:
1) Pencil Tool
2) Paintbrush
3) Airbrush
4) Paint Bucket

As you might have guessed, the Pencil tool is used to draw when you desire a sharp edge. The Paintbrush can also be used for drawing but the edge will be softer and somewhat transparent. Similar to the Paintbrush is the Airbrush; except this tool creates an even softer edge and the entire line is transparent. For a quick fill-in of an entire area use the Paint Bucket. One click will do the trick!

To use either of the Paint Tools just click on the tool of your choice and then select any desired options from the Option Bar. These options include the brush size, shape and pattern that you wan to use when painting with the mouse.

A new brush can easily be selected by choosing the Brush drop-down menu on the Options Bar. You can even modify the characteristics of the brush you are using. Start by clicking on it in the Options Bar. You should see a dialog box listing modification selections for your choosing. Choices include; brush diameter, hardness, and spacing. Even the brush tip’s angle and roundness can be manipulated!

You will need to select the layer that you want to work on in the Layers Palette. Drawing is done by dragging the mouse.

To use the Paint Bucket just click on the Paint Bucket tool and select option choices from the Options Bar. Then go into the Layers Palette to select the layer in which you want to paint. Use the selection tools to select the part or area of the layer that you wish to fill. Don’t forget to ensure that the foreground color is set to the hue you prefer. Finally, use the mouse to point to the selected area. With a single click the selected area will fill with the foreground color.

Photoshop’s Paint Tools make drawing, coloring, adjusting and manipulating the colors of your image an easy process. Through practice your techniques will quickly be perfected.

Photoshop: Selection Tools

Okay, so you have an image that is looking great – except for a small portion of it that you want to make some adjustments to. The problem is that you don’t want to lose all the wonderful work that you’ve done – the part that’s looking great. No worries!

You will have the ability to alter the color, shape, texture, positioning, as well as other qualities, while leaving the remainder of the image unchanged.

There are three selection Tools:
Marquee Tools, Lasso Tools and Magic Wand

If the area you want to adjust is a regularly shaped area, such as that of a: rectangle, single row, single column, or elliptical in shape, you will want to use the marquee tools. This tool is effective and easy to use. Begin by setting the options you want in the Options Bar. Then drag over the area you wish to select.

The Lasso tools are used specifically for irregular shaped areas. You will find that under the heading of Lasso Tools there are subcategories: Polygonal Lasso Tool and the Magnetic Lasso Tool respectfully.

The Lasso works perfectly if you want the selection to completely or primarily freehand. After selecting desired options drag your mouse to draw a freehand segment of the selection. To draw a straight-edged segment of the selection it will be necessary to hold down the Alt key and click at the desired beginning and end points of the segment. When you want to close the selection border you will let go of the mouse button – do not hold down the Alt key.

The Polygonal Lasso Tool is used in a similar fashion but in the opposite way. To draw a freehand segment of the selection you will need to hold down the Alt key as you drag the mouse.

The Magic Wand is a tool in itself. It is used to select areas of an image based on color. You will the option of either: creating a new selection, adding to an existing selection, subtracting from an existing selection, or intersecting with the existing selection.

All of the selection tools can be used together or alone, depending on your needs.

You will find that transforming will be necessary in much of your Photoshop work. Let me first explain just what transforming is. This is the process of changing an objects appearance by modifying one or more of its physical characteristics.

The Photoshop transform function includes: scaling, rotating, skewing, changing perspective, distorting, and flipping. Photoshop had the insight to design the program in a way that allows users to transform entire images, individual layers, and/or specific selections.

1) Scale – Allows one to change the size of the image.
2) Rotate – This function rotates the bounding box clockwise or counter-clockwise
3) Skew – Think of the Eiffel Tower.this function makes an image look like itís leaning.
4) Changing Perspectives – With this feature you can change a part of the image to look closer or farther away.
5) Distort – To distort an image you will find that it will look twisted and no two sides will be parallel.
6) Flipping – This feature will completely reverse an image and the reversal can either be horizontal or vertical.

To begin a transformation first choose what it is that you want to transform. To apply a transformation to a layer use the Layers tab to select it. To apply a transformation to an image you must select the image using the selection tools.

Using the Edit menu, choose the desired transformation from the transform menu. You should now see a box with handles around your selection. Use the handles to drag to make the desired change. You will be able to view the results.

You have the ability to make more than one transformation. After you are finished with your modifications press the Enter or Return key to accept the transformation. You can select to cancel the transformation with the Esc key or by clicking Cancel.

Photoshop – The Type Tool

Now when I first saw the term Type Tool I had no idea what it could be. I soon learned the Type could be related to typing (at least in my mind!) because the Type Tool allows you to add text to your image.

The Photoshop has lots of control over the text in his/her image. The formatting allows adjustments to the font, size, style, color, alignment, orientation (vertical or horizontal), kerning, leading, tracking, indenting, line spacing, and much more, including the ability to stretch, shrink and warp the text in numerous ways.

Using the Type Tool is easy. To get started select the tool from the toolbox. Choose the desired type options (in the Options Bar). You will many options available to you in the Options Bar – you can specify the orientation, font, text color, style, size, anti-aliasing and text warp options.

The Character and Paragraph palettes can be used to make other text and/or paragraph changes. For kerning, leading, tracking, baseline shift, and vertical and horizontal expanding/contracting you will use the Character palette. To align text, work with indentation, paragraph spacing and hyphenation the Paragraph palette is used.

Adding text is easy – simply click on the image in the spot that you want the text to appear. If the Type tool is selected and the image is clicked Photoshop will automatically add a new text layer.

The next step is to type your text. When you are satisfied with your work press the Enter or Return key.

Opacity & Color Selection

The term opacity describes the amount of transparency a layer has. Setting a layers opacity level to 100% will result in a layer that is completely opaque. To put it simply, you will not be able to see through it. If the setting is at 50% the layers opacity will be see-through and any layers behind it can show through. If the setting is at 0% the layer will be invisible.

The opacity of a layer can be adjusted using the slider bar located in the Layers Palette. Its easy to manipulate, simply highlight the desired layer and adjust the slider bar.

Photoshop provides features that allow the selection of color of your choice for use in part of your image. Photoshop has the foreground color and the background stored in memory. Use the foreground color when you paint, fill, or stroke selections. The background color is used to make gradients and fill in the erased areas of an image.

The default setting for colors will be a white background and a black foreground. You can easily swap the background and foreground by clicking on the small curved arrow on the toolbox.

The Eyedropper tool can be used to click on a color in an open image thus selecting it as the foreground color. Hold down the Alt key when you click to set the background color.

The color picker allows you to select a specific shade of a color either by pointing and clicking or by entering the correct color code. After you are satisfied with your color choice just click the OK button to return to the image.

Take your time and be patient with yourself. Practice by playing with your images. You will soon be an expert at creating images with the perfect opacity and color.

Using The Burn, Dodge & Sponge Tools

Many times you will find that you need to adjust the lighting effect of a particular area on an photograph or image. Fortunately Photoshop comes equipped with features that allow just that! As you might imagine, the Burn tool is used to darken an area of an image. In contrast, the Dodge tool is used to lighten areas and the Sponge tool is used to change saturation of colors for a particular area.

To use these tools you will need to select the appropriate tool from the Toolbox. According to which tool you select to use the Options Bar will change also. Upon experimentation you will find that the Burn tool and the Dodge tool have the same options available for your use.

On the Options Bar you can select the type of brush as well as the size of the brush that you want to use. You will find that other brush options are also available and to display those, simply click on the arrow on the upper right corner of the brush palette.

The Options Bar also has a feature that allows for the adjustment of Exposure and/or Pressure percentage (between 10% – 15%). This one feature allows you precise control over the amount of lightening, darkening, or saturation that you choose to use. The lower the percentage the less drastic the effect will be.

While using either the Burn tool or the Dodge tool you have the option of selecting shadows, midtones, or highlights from the Range drop-down menu. The Sponge tool allows you the option of selecting either Saturate or De-saturate and use the Mode drop-down menu on the Options Bar. Utilize the use of your mouse to create the desired effect.

These tools provide easy and precise control when making darkening or lightening adjustments to an area of an image. Adjustments to the saturation of colors can result in truer to life color levels

If you are like me, you would have questions about things that some people think are obvious. I’m not techie at all so when I use software that requires the least amount of technical skill, I get nervous.

This article will cover some of the basics related to Photoshop drawing tools and special effects. First you should know that Photoshop has features that allow you to adjust the brightness and the contrast of your image. This affords you the ability to have greater control over the quality of your picture. If an image is too dark or too light you have controls (brightness and contrast) that allow adjustments.

Follow the five simple steps to adjusting the brightness and contrast of your image:

1) Open the Layer drop-down menu.
2) Use your pointer to point to the “New Adjustment Layer”. Using the feature will create a new layer for your improvements and/or enhancements while the original image remains intact.
3) Click on the “Brightness/Contrast” tab. This will enable the Brightness/Contrast dialog box.
4) You should now check the ëPreviewí check box. This feature enables you to view your adjustments before they are finalized.
5) You can now adjust the “Brightness and Contrast” level by using either the slider bars or by changing the numerical value.

It’s amazing how much difference the appropriate level of brightness and contrast can make. Play with the settings until you get it just right. Remember, you can make adjustments while the original image remains intact.

Adobe Photoshop is an omnipotent tool that is able to manipulate and crate images that fascinate us. From adjusting color in a photo to the creation of awesome graphics this tool is useful for almost anyone with a computer.

The only drawback is that learning how to use Photoshop can take time – and that includes time to simply play with the tools of the system. This article will focus on some quick tips for using the Interface.

In the Application Window you will the “Zoom Field” at the bottom left of the document. You can enter an exact zoom level – to do so simply enter the value and the hit “Shift + Enter”. To check the status Display Options choose the option from the pop-up menu. Double-clicking on the background (the gray application background) is the same as using ‘File>>Open’.

To change the font size go to ‘Edit>>General Preferences’. High resolution displays increased UI Font Size.

Quick Tip: You can select the “Document Profile” from the status bar menu to display the color-space for each document.

You can change the color of the canvas border and switch between four available screen modes in the “Document Window”. To mark a document as copyrighted choose ‘Files>>File Information – Change Copyright Status to Copyrighted’.

Quick Tip: To display a document’s full path simply pause the mouse over the document window’s toolbar.

After making changes to the panels you may find that you want to reset things back to default. Simply select the ‘Default Workspace’ from the Workspace drop-down menu.

Quick Tip: The ‘Tab key” will hide all panels and ‘Shift + Tab’ will hide all but the ‘Tools Panel’.

Quick Tip: When dragging panels hold down the ‘Ctrl/Cmd key’, this will prevent the panels from snapping to the edge of the screen.

Quick Tip: Panels can be stacked by dragging one onto the bottom of another.

The ‘Swatches Panel” is used to create a custom swatch and the ‘History Panel” allows you create a duplicate image from a selected image.
