The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers Voices That Matter

Scott Kelby was honored with Professional Photographer magazine’s highly coveted 2008 Hot One Award for The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers. Here’s what Jeff Kent, the Hot One Editor at Professional Photographer, has to say about the book: “In a how-to published by Peachpit Press, Scott Kelby, best-selling author on Adobe Photoshop, delves into CS3 to uncover the most important and useful techniques for digital photographers. Our judges liked Kelby’s direct approach with step-by-step instructions. In this new edition, Kelby shares even more secrets from the top pros.”

Shutterbug magazine chose The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers as a Top Digital Book of 2007.  Here’s what Joe Farace of Shutterbug has to say about the book: “Scott Kelby’s name on a Photoshop book is like the Dodge brand on the front of a pickup truck. You know it’s built RAM—or pixel—tough. Combining his famous twisted wit with unwaveringly straight tutorials, Kelby takes you through a detailed tour of Photoshop CS3 by showing how to use the new features. No fluff; just page after page of well-illustrated tutorials showing photographers how to get the most out of the new features, commands, and effects found in the latest version of Adobe’s flagship. It will get you up to speed on CS3’s new features faster than you can all by yourself.”

Scott Kelby, the #1 best-selling Photoshop author in the world today, once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers the latest, most important, and most exciting new Adobe Photoshop CS3 techniques for digital photographers. This major update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that’s never been done before–it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step-by-step the exact techniques used by today’s cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why.

That’s why the previous editions of this book are widely used as the official course study guide in photography courses at college and universities around the world, and this new edition for Photoshop CS3 exposes even more of the top pros’ most closely-guarded secrets.

Learn How The Pros Do It
Each year Scott trains thousands of professional photographers on how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions, the same problems, and the same challenges–and that’s exactly what he covers in this book. You’ll learn:

• The sharpening techniques the pros really use.
• The pros’ tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast!
• How to get great looking prints (that actually match your screen!)
• A whole chapter on the latest, most requested Photoshop special effects!
• How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat.
• How to process Raw images, plus how to take advantage of all the new Camera Raw features in CS3!
• The portrait retouching secrets only the pros know about!
• How to add real automation to your work.
• How to show your work like a pro!

Plus a host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick “insider” tricks to send your productivity through the roof! If you’re a digital photographer, and you’re ready to learn the “tricks of the trade”–the same ones that today’s leading pros use to correct, edit, sharpen, retouch, and present their work–then you’re holding the book that will do just that.

5 Stars Excellent Way To Learn CS3
This book makes learning photoshop CS3 so easy! Each chapter is a lesson unto itself. I felt fairly secure in my knowledge of layers before purchasing this book, now I find I was barely using the basics! I was missing the full potential that I had available and didn’t even know it! If you want to learn photoshop at home, on your computer, this is the book for you!

5 Stars great!
I love this item, it came in exactly the condition it said it was, maybe a little better, and I’m really enjoying it!

5 Stars “From a College Instructor’s aspect…”
I have read several Photoshop books written by Mr. Kelby, and learned quite a few shortcuts to producing great work. His CS3 book for Digital Photographers is just like having Scott by your side telling you how to take your image from good to great!! The information on using Adobe Bridge to organize images and using Camera Raw to process them is so helpful that I have added this book to the list of suggested reading materials for my students. I teach Photoshop Basic and Digital Imaging/Photoshop at the local college. I feel that this basic information will be invaluable to both returning and new students.

5 Stars This book helped me start to understand photoshop.
As a newbe to photoshop I needed a book to present an easy to follow, visual plan. This book did it for me. It helped me to understand other books I bought to teach me photoshop. I can build on the things I learned in this book. Not a book that takes you step by step through a photo retouch but will get you started with some photoshop tools.

4 Stars The best way to learn
I bought this book at the request of my instructor. This has been the BEST purchase I have made in a longtime. I have the CS3 for dummies and it explains but if you don’t know then you don’t know. This book has step by step pictures to teach, also every lesson is done on 2 pages only. GREAT BOOK! If you need to learn CS3 then you need this book. I own a sign and graphics company and this book really is an awesome tool for us here because you can reference quickly and can understand and comprehend a lot faster than just reading.

5 Stars Great Beginner Book hands DOWN
I have to laugh at this book. I have been a photoshop user for a long time and was given this book as course material for my intro to photoshop class that i had to take. I in my own record time finished this book in a week and half. I didnt really learn much from this book, but it was fun doing it. Dont let that scare you, this book is great for a beginner and touches on some great key facts for a beginner that needs to know, i just have been using photoshop for awhile and knew alot of the functions. I do feel that this book does not cover all the basics or features like some of the top need to know 100 how tos. In the long run, this is a great starting book for a user that wants to learn Photoshop CS3

5 Stars I am glad to have this book
As a novice to PS, I bought 3 other books. After reading those books, I still don’t have confidence to work on my own pictures. Because they taught me by showing what features applied to their projects, not the case for my own pictures. I want to know all the basic features in PS so that I can pick the tools by myself. Even this book is simple, some features you already knew, but SOME USEFUL FEATURES you might not know in PS. After reading this one, I know what to do and keep moving on to be a professional. You won’t be disappointed if you are new to PS. Thanks.

5 Stars This Book is Awesome for Beginners like me. I’m reading it right now and learning PhotoShop!!!
Just started going through this book so far its seems pretty good. It’s awesome for beginners like me. Once I keep going through it I can give a better review…

4 Stars QuickStart Guides Photoshop CS4
These CS4 QuickStart Guides look like a great idea. Was told about them by a friend who said they start you off just like you don’t know anything about the product and walk you through the whole product bit by bit.

Wonderful idea. Will buy more of these to get myself caught up on Adobe’s line.

5 Stars Great book
I bought this book for a class that I am taking and it is very well written and in full colour, which may or may not be important; to me, it is. It is pretty thorough. I have had some experience with Photoshop, but I have learned a great deal about this program that I hadn’t known before hand with this book. I am waiting for the Illustrator CS4 book to be released.

1 Star Not for a beginner!
I bought this book hoping it would be a good start for someone who has never used Photoshop. I was very wrong. The book is very poorly organized. It rambles on about things you don’t need to know to start out. For example the very first thing you need to do is create a new document yet the book does not tell you this. It tells you how to create a new document but hides this topic in the second chapter.

5 Stars Great Tool for Post Processing
As a self taught Photoshop user, it seems like I have a world to learn. I have purchased several Photoshop books and an online course with limited success. This one book has done more to help me improve my skills than any other resource. It is not designed for the beginner, but someone who has a foundation of photoshop skills and wants to expand their reach. I really appreciate how Scott Kelby offers multiple digital post processing solutions via Photoshop techniques. I routinely reach for this book and highly recommend it.

4 Stars Easy to understand!
I used this book in a photo class and found it extremely easy to understand to work through the assignments without much help from the instructor. So I bought this book as a gift for a friend of mine to help with learning Photoshop….. I highly recommend this book!

5 Stars Scott Kelby gets right to it
Scott Kelby gets right to it. You quickly learn the most important lessons and uses of Photoshop from a photographer’s perspective.

The book is very well written and easy to follow.

You can choose to follow each topic, or if a topic is of less interest, move on to the next topic. Some of the most important topics/pages I marked with a paper clip for easy reference.

Follow this book and you will be a Photoshop god in comparison to most other photographers.

5 Stars WOW!!!!! GET THIS BOOK NOW!!!!
I can’t say enough great things about this book to do it justice. I love this book. I have had CS2 for a while, but it might as well have been Elements 1 for the good it was doing me (by the way, I don’t even know how to work Elements, or if there is even an Elements 1!). Anyway, this book is so straight forward, you don’t need to know anything beforehand. For each procedure, it talks you through it step by step. What I loved about this book was that it didn’t assume you already knew stuff, it just told you “do this and that and click this and click that”, with tons of pictures to help you along. I recommend this book IMMENSELY!!!

5 Stars Excellent book
This is an excellent book for the beginner and pro alike! Scott Kelby wrote the book in a very easy to understand format (with a few jokes thrown in for the fun of it), and everything is demonstrated and explained in a precise step by step format. If you follow the steps you cannot go wrong, and your photos will come out looking like a professional shoot. Also, anything you could think about doing with a photo is covered in this book. Excellent resource for your digital photo processing.

1 Star Do not waste your money here
I was very disappointed in this video course.

Rather than “mastering” Photoshop this was

more of a bare bones introduction to the various

concepts. The tutorials are very short and several

important concepts are dealt with in one sentence

in the syllabus and some are not touched on at all.

I contacted the company requesting a refund and they

told me that they do not offer refunds so I am stuck

with this amateurish product.

My advice is stay away from this company. You

could do much better by saving your money and

Googling “free photoshop tutorials”….Hundreds

Digital Photo: Things to Know

The best thing about a digital photo is that you can manipulate it to the extent of your imagination. This manipulation can be achieved thanks to various software packages available on the market, varying in complexity from the feature packed Adobe Photoshop to Paint Shop Pro.

Still, there is magic when a digital photo is modified by experienced hands and eyes, allowing that unbelievable moment to be captured in such a way as to never be forgotten, but even then they can be refined further. It is the story or the impression behind that moment that keeps the viewer enamoured with the photo for a longer period of time.

It takes time to become a perfect photographer and one needs to grow though experimentation and experiences.

However a basic knowledge of the techniques of photographing is must. A digital camera is not all that is required to make a good photographer.

Primarily, know your camera well. Read the manual top to bottom, and then go out to play with the machine.

Now come back to the basics and learn about other things like exposure, shutter speed, aperture etc that helps you to customize your digital photo in real time. You can find a lot of hand books online and offline to get an initial idea of how this is achieved.

As a brief explanation of some of the primary terms; exposure is the point in the process of taking photo when the light sensitive film or sensor is exposed to a light source. Over or under exposure may destroy the image, so be careful while setting it in your digital camera and capturing the photo.

Shutter speed is the time period for which the shutter is held open for light to reach the digital photo sensor. Depending on the variations of combinations of lens aperture and sensor’s sensibility, it regulates how much light the camera will record when taking a digital photo. Shutter speed can directly affect the quality of your digital photo dependant on the situation and whether the object is moving or still.

An aperture is a hole or the gap through which light enters into the camera sensor or the film.

One should always remember that they cannot go far when skipping the basics of the trade when taking these elements into consideration.

There are so many other important aspects that you need to know for taking visually good digital photo. We will come to them later.

Now, when you go out again to play with your digital camera, try to realise the potential for variance with all aspects mentioned here. With a digital camera you always have the option to know about the quality of the photo without taking a print.

One last thought: while taking a digital photo try to sort out by yourself the relationship between “object” and “film-depth”.

Last minute experiment: keeping camera settings same, change the location of the object in respect to the frame. Download these digital photos in your computer and study them critically and objectively.

You have all the answers.

You may be a pro when it comes to using the Clone Stamp Tool in the Photoshop program but have you tried working with the Healing Brush Tool?

The Healing Brush Tool is fairly new and while the Clone Stamp Tool is perfect in many design instances, the Healing Brush Tool can add something new to your work.

You have probably used the Clone Stamp Tool for many imaging jobs but there are times when the Healing Brush Tool is an even better choice.

If you are working on a surface that is textured it may be hard to disguise the involvement of the Clone Stamp Tool. It is just hard to hide its use and what you sample using this tool is what you end up with. The finished product is often not nearly as good as you had hoped.

We will look at how the two tools operate doing the same enhancement job. This is an ordinary cosmetic enhancement job, one that you may often encounter.

First you’ll need a facial image with a freckle or dry skin blemish . If you use the Clone Stamp you can sample a clear patch of skin and spray it over the spot. The skin graft is rather noticeable because the area of skin that was sampled is not the same hue as the area that needed to be fixed.

The Healing Brush Tool can be used to do a much better job. If you are working on a minor blemish, the Healing Brush Tool will work by sampling both the destination pixels and the source pixels.

The two samples are then mixed to produce a much nicer blend. When you want to take a sample use it like the Clone Tool and proceed with [Alt]/[Option]-Click. At first glance you may have doubts.

As you begin to spray it may look odd but once you let go of the mouse button after you have sprayed some of the sampled pixels, you will see the results. You should not be able to tell that the image has been edited once the Healing Brush is finished. For even more healing you can reduce the brush size and you will be able to work on other areas like the red patch of skin by the nose.
