5 Stars Great Place to Start
I was a complete noob to Photoshop. I had zero, zip, zilch, nada, no exerience using Photoshop. This was the first book I read on the subject. It got me started immediately using Photoshop. Deke McClelland’s watch, read, do approach to Photoshop worked wonders for me. Watch the video, read the lesson, follow the step by step instructions. It is a great introduction to Photoshop and, will prepare you for more advanced techniques. Although, it also includes more than a few tricks and, secrets that even experienced Photoshop users might not know. I have been using Photoshop for about a year now and, I still often refer to this book. Worth every penny of the cost.

5 Stars Great instructions and lessons
I’m pretty new to Photoshop and CS3 extended so I found this book extremely easy to read and with easy directions to follow. The lessons are great and Deke’s humour is good. I wish he would write some tecnique type books. I highly recommend this book to newbies to Photoshop.

5 Stars PS CS 3
Great book for beginners in photoshop. I previously had no experience with photoshop at all and this book was easy to follow, especially with the video tutorials as well

5 Stars Photoshop CS3 how-to-book
Outstanding book. Even for advanced beginners this is an excellent book. Techniques that you would never think of using. As an example; using the “Inner Glow” layer style to remove haloing/fringe of background color. Works wonders for blending the edges and matching the color of your subject. This and other techniques and tool options you probably never realized were available. Also, a very good video is included. Deke McClelland does a masterful job of explaining both in the book and the video. Money well spent and I highly recommend it (there is also a CS4 edition)……..

5 Stars Easy to understand
I’m working my way through this and have found it really easy to follow. Photoshop fascinated me and although I’d played around with it I didn’t really know what I was doing and the results were hit and miss. Now I can more fully understand the reason and workings behind the various features and while it can still be time consuming to get something just right, I know I’m on the right track. The videos are great and when you follow up with the relative chapters in the book it all just comes together. The book is written in plain easy to understand terms, not too technical for a real beginner like me.

5 Stars Approachable, engaging, and worthwhile…
I recently purchased Adobe’s CS4 Web Premium edition, and was giddy at the prospect of learning all the new ins an outs of the new program, but already had a great deal of experience with Photoshop (starting with version 7). I hesitated not getting something like Ben Willmore’s “Up to Speed” book, but I’ve found that there are so many resources on the web that I’m able to watch tutorials to learn about the new pieces of CS4 that way.

I wavered between Scott Kelby’s book and Deke McLelland’s One on One series, and ultimately decided that I’d seen enough Scott Kelby on Photoshop User TV for free so why not try Deke. I’m so glad I did.

His masking techniques, video companion, and mathematical descriptions of how Photoshop looks at images all come together seamlessly. He uses different examples in his videos with the same focus as the chapters they represent. The text has icons right from the photoshop screen rather than telling you to click the mask button, or the layer styles button. Deke also explains what specific settings mean to more than just one image. His sense of humor is entertaining, and doesn’t get in the way of the purpose at hand, to learn masking with channels. He does give you some good lessons on making selections, and tells you when to use which type of selection tool, and why. I’ve spent many years with Photoshop, and still feel that I’ve learned a great deal from following along with Deke’s lessons. I’m tempted to get One on One with Illustrator if he offers it. Thanks Deke!

4 Stars Great learning book.
Great book, but too many technical problems with this releave. Also way too many typographical errors in the book.

4 Stars Photoshop CS4 channels & masks
This book is great! I have been using photoshop for many years now, this book is showing me new stuff!!!!!

It is definitely a book for advanced users. But if your willing to push yourself, I can’t recommend this book enough !

Cheers!!!!!

Photoshop CS4 Channels & Masks One-on-One

I bought this book because of the subject matter, channels and masks.

The video that comes with it is the simple versions of the concepts in the book.

I would have liked to have seen more difficult examples like seperating trees from a bushy backround.

For me, the book tends to get lost in translation, it’s not cut and dry, theres a lot of verbage for each example, some of it useless for the average user.

I would the pay the same price for a book half that size that cuts to the chase and shows me how to work with channels and masks.

I don’t care how the program works, i’m looking for instant gratification with my little artworks.

5 Stars Great Book
Do you want to know everything there is to know about channels and masks in Photoshop CS4? Well, this book will get you well on your way. Deke McClelland is a great writer. He makes the samples fun and, yet, quite challenging at the same time. I purchased this book and wasn’t disappointed.

5 Stars DO YOURSELF A FAVOR – BUY THIS BOOK
Not a computer person. This book is an easey & comprehensive, step by step guide. You MUST read ALL instructions B4 U start. The short cut plug ins for CS4 ONLY. U MUST follow instructions EXACTLY. There REALLY is a right way & a wrong way. Don’t just download it anywhere. If done wrong, it can B a nightmare and mess up your PS settings. It’s 4 CS4 ONLY. Also, U must open a web browser in background, THEN open C/D & lessons. Have fun! It’s one of my favs.(I typed like this bcuz I didn’t have enuff room 4 all the letters)

5 Stars Excellent value
First of all, I’m no expert at CS4, but I am far from being a novice when it comes to image editing. I did the first two chapters of this book and decided not to wait to purchase the second volume: Photoshop CS4 Channels & Masks One-on-One. The book, the accompanying DVD and the organization of the lessons, exercises and projects make these books an excellent value for learning CS4. Who better to learn from than someone who makes a good living doing what he loves to do?

5 Stars Excellent addition to a PSCS4 library
In typical DekeMcClelland style, the step-by-step descriptions are detailed, understandable, and precise. This is not your typical Photoshop manual: it really reads like a well thought-out tutorial on how to use Photoshop CS4 capabilities in the context of a logical image correcting workflow. The prose is almost conversational, as though the reader was sitting in a workshop and the book was doing the talking. I think the procedures described and their order (Deke’s prescribed PSCS4 workflow) is excellent.

The book comes with an excellent disc containing several hours of video tutorials from Lydia.com. These are very well done and complement the book beautifully. These are real, detailed tutorials and not snippets: you’ll learn from them. Between the tutorials and the lessons in the book, I really felt like I’d gotten a “one-on-one” course in Photoshop, and my ability to edit photos was definitely improved. The discussions on masks and the uses of layers were terrific.

One-on-One is more of a series of detailed lessons than a reference book. I appreciated the clear descriptions of how tools worked and why the author chose particular sequences and ways of doing things. A small nit: while all tools and capabilities seem to be represented in the index, some corresponding techniques are not. For example, “free transform” is there, but “transform” is not.

I found many of the “Sidebar” comments–which are often 1-2 pages long–distracting. The problem isn’t the content, which is invariably very useful: the problem is where the sidebars fall. Too often a sidebar will be placed between two pages of a detailed procedure or other discussion. I found this placement distracting. At other times, sidebars are politely placed between logical discussions and their pages referenced in the text. After encountering a number of distractingly placed sidebars, I found myself wishing that they’d been appended to the chapters and referenced appropriately.

As a long-time, “somewhere between beginner and intermediate” Photoshop user, I’d readily recommend this book to people new to image editing and to new PSCS4 users, even if you’ve used earlier versions of Photoshop. The book is written with a friendly, informative, and accessible style and the content should appeal to many beginning and intermediate Photoshop users.

5 Stars Five stars for beginners
Photoshop one-on-one is a great place for newcomers to learn Photoshop. It has easy to follow exercises and good explanatory videos all with Deke McClelland’s unique sense of humor, which makes things more fun. If you’re familiar with Photoshop or you want more of a reference manual this may not be the book for you, but if you’re just getting started this book is great!

1 Star Warning if you’re conversative or giving to a teen
Nothing prepared me to find nude women in the book or on the video. They may be bent over or in a blowing towel, but all the same, this is a computer book. A wise author would not risk offending viewers without warning.

If you’re buying this for a teen or if you’re conservative, you can find a non-offensive book, I’m sure. I’m just hoping I can return it since I opened the video before discovering the pictures.

3 Stars Little to basic for me
Personally I was a little disappointed with this DvD. Not because it was a bad training guide, but because I knew most everything in it already. I’ve been a creative retoucher for 17 years and thought this DvD would get me up to speed on the new features in CS3. Which it did a OK job of.

All in all this would be a excellent training DvD for a Photoshop beginner or even a newer user. If you’ve been working in Photoshop as a Professional for many years, you might want to try a different book or DvD. One thing I did love was learning some newer keyboard short cuts. Deke McClelland is a smart guy, I hope he comes out with a much more advanced DvD in the future.

Cheers

Photoshop CS3 Mastering Lab Color

Photoshop CS3 Mastering Lab Color

Based on the device-independent CIE specification from 1976, Lab color is frequently misrepresented as a techy, labor-intensive color space. In fact, Lab color performs certain types of color modifications more quickly and with better results than RGB. In Photoshop CS3: Mastering Lab Color, Deke McClelland explores how to use Lab color ‘to make bad photographs great and great photographs even better.’ He demonstrates image manipulations that are best suited to Lab, and walks through a typical, non-destructive Lab correction. Deke also shows how to correct lighting, apply selective color modifications, and reverse the effects of color cast. Exercise files accompany the course. Topics Include:

  • Targeting luminance and color information independently
  • Saving a Lab image
  • Balancing and deepening skin tones
  • Exposing bright eyes and teeth
  • Sharpening and blurring in Lab
  • Fading and blending edits
  • Using Levels, Curves, and Brightness/Contrast
  • Embedding an RGB image in a Lab composition
  • Boosting shadows and dimming highlights

Deke McClelland does a great job with this. It is easy to follow along except when it comes to saving his brush set in Windows Vista. Otherwise the step by step instructions with the video make it very easy to pick up how to use CS4.
